Review of Reviews: Be Kind, Rewind

by Alexa Stanford

The comical film is based in Passaic, New Jersey about a small VHS only video store named Be Kind Rewind, which is why the film was named that. A man named Mr. Fletcher, played by Danny Glover, in a fated building, where he works with his stepson Mike, played by Mos Def, owns the store. Even though Mr. Fletcher claims that Thomas Wright “Fats” Waller was born in the building, the City Hall wants to relocate and destroy the building. This now means that Mr. Fletcher has to go on a journey and inform Mike to keep his crazy friend Jerry, played by the famous Jack Black, out of the store.  Jerry actually developed a theory against the machines and decides to disrupt the power plant, but he has an accident and ends up getting magnetized. When he goes to visit Mike in the video store, he accidently erased all the tapes…Oops! Mike and Jerry had to then figure out a way to somehow hide the accident, because Mr. Fletcher’s friend Miss Falewicz came into the store to check out the movie “Ghostbusters,” which they had to actually remake for her. The film contains a series of different events, which makes the film very entertaining and worth the watch, because the audience is going to constantly want to know what happens next!

On Rotten Tomatoes, my personal favorite go-to movie review website, the movie received an average rating of 6.3/10 stars, so a total of 66% from the critics, while the audience had a 56% that liked and enjoyed the movie. Which means that more than half of the people who watched the film were very entertained and satisfied with the film.

Some critics stated things like the movie seemed to not have a focus and it was hard to figure that out at first, but once it does, it becomes a very entertaining and unique experience. The plot, most of the critics are saying, does not make much sense, but it turns into a corny and unique film once different events start happening. On the other hand, some critics hated this film stating the filmmakers do not know how to make a movie and the whole movie makes no sense and is just filled with idiots, which is pretty harsh. Others seemed to be somewhat nice stating that it had good ideas for the film, but they were just not seen on the screenplay very well. The audience definitely seemed a lot happier about the film, mostly stating how well Jack Black and Mos Def made the film very entertaining creating a lot of “belly laughs” most of the time. The audience also stated how the film is very silly and cute, but worth the watch!

On Metacritic, the film received a little bit higher than Rotten Tomatoes gave it, a 6.7 out of 10. Most of the critics on this website gave a lot of positive ratings, sitting at a number of 18 out of 17 mixed and negative ratings, stating the movie is “charmingly off-the-wall little tale” and “in its sweet, lackadaisical way, Michael Gondry’s film illuminates the pleasures and paradoxes of movie love.” Of course, it received only 5 negative comments from critics stating the movie was not funny, even though it was a comical film, but it all really depends on someone’s sense of humor, which goes for any film. The audiences seemed to love the movie saying it is definitely a goofy film that is hilarious and comical, one person stating, “the critics need to lighten up a little bit,” which is true, since some of them can be pretty harsh while rating movies.

On IMDb, all of the reviews, while scrolling and reading, were all very positive about the film. Most of the reviews stated the film is very fun, but can be confusing due to the script and plot of the film. The reviews also suggest before watching the film, to watch the trailer, because it really says it all about the film and the person who highly suggested this states they really enjoyed the film and they are glad they watched it.

The movie, Be Kind Rewind, was released in the United States on February 22, 2008. It was directed and written by Michel Gondry. The worldwide box office brought in a total of $30,894,247. The video release for this movie was on June 17th, 2008 by Turner Home Entertainment and those sales brought in a total of $5,273,325 alone. The movie runs for a total of 1 hour and 42 minutes, which is worth the watch if someone wants to watch a silly, but entertaining comical film.
