Biography: Mike Judge

by Michael Abels

Mike Judge was born on October 17, 1962 in Ecuador in the town of Guayaquil. He was raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico. His mother was a teacher and his father was an archaeologist. He went to the University of California in San Diego and graduated with a physics degree in the year 1985. Before he truly got into the film industry he was an engineer who than moved to Texas and became a musician for a living. In 1991 his interest was peaked when he went to an animation festival and whenever he had free time he would make cartoons and send them to different TV channels. In 1992 MTV hired him to make a TV series that would be called Beavis and Butt-Head. He was a writer on this show and also voiced most of the characters in it.

After the successes of Beavis and Butt-Head and the movie that was based on the show, him and Greg Daniels, who had written for The Simpsons, created another popular adult cartoon called King of the Hill. In this TV show he was the voice of the main character Hank Hill. His first break into live action was in his movie Office Space. It was made in 1999 and was about the everyday work life and the characters who did not enjoy their jobs. The movie was received relatively well. It was not the number one film of the year but it was far from the worst. Mike Judge would often complain about the marketing camping and wished some aspects of it would have been changed.

His next famous film was Idiocracy. It was made in 2006 and talked about anti-intellectualism and consumerism. It was similar to Office Space because when it first came out it did not succeed that well, but than it started to become a cult hit later on. He than worked on other things until his most recent live-action television series Silicon Valley

He seems to focus on satire films and television series and excels in this type of comedy. From his filmography he does not seem to prefer dramas. He has also voiced in many different movies and television series. One example is he was many deado voices in the movie R.I.D.P. He is also good friends with Seth MacFarlane. Because of this friendship that they have together, he voices some characters in his shows. He usually just plays Hank Hill in his shows. Another famous show that he has voiced Hank Hill in was The Simpsons

His characters Bevis and Butt-Head have also been in many different media forms. They have been in movies such as Airheads and Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. They have also been on many different talk shows such as Jimmy Kimmel Live! and Late show with David Letterman. He has also been in thee episodes of Saturday Night Live. This was in the years 1993 and 1994. He also has made terrible mistakes in his life.

One was the show The Goode Family. It only had 13 episodes and was not received well at all initially and after it ended. Many people tend to enjoy his comedy. Most of his movies and shorts and television shows have either been received well initially or became cult hits over time. People are still talking about King of the Hill because some of the comedy still works and people still enjoy it because it still holds up. One way most of his films are connected is the structure he uses. They tend to be about a normal, enjoyable and nice boring man who interacts with people with extreme emotions and situations. An interesting fact about him was that in 2007 he wainducted into the Texas Film Hall of Fame.

I've never really understood why King of the Hill is animated. That is, it doesn't really use the medium in such a way that would distinguish it from live action. Unlike just about every other animated show that I can think of, nothing happens in King of the Hill that couldn't be done with real sets and actors. So why is it animated?

Anyone have any thoughts on this?
