Biography: The Ferrelly Brothers

by Isaac Fletcher

Peter Farrelly and Bobby Farrelly, professionaly known as The Farrelly Brothers, are a comedy producer/writer/director duo that have credit in quite a few well known gross-out comedy films. Peter John Farrelly, the older of the two, was born on December 17, 1956 in Phoenixville Pennsylvania. His younger brother, Robert Leo Farrelly Jr. was born two years later on June 17, 1958 in Cumberland Rhode Island to parents Mariann and Robert Leo Farrelly. Peter graduated from Providence College in Rhode Island but he went on to acquire his masters in creative writing from Columbia University in New York. Bobby, with a scholarship for hockey, entered and graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Although their education had little to do with the film industry specifically, Peter took an interest in screenwriting. Bobby tried his hand at an entrepreneurial career, but decided instead to collaborate with his brother. They spent almost 9 years writing screenplays before they saw success. The two of them scored their first major credit writing for an episode of the hit series Seinfeld. This led to them making their first feature length film, Dumb and Dumber. The film starring Jim Carrey was a success that earned more than $340 million. The Brothers went on to form production company Conundrum Entertainment and produce several more comedies to varying degrees of success.

There’s Something About Mary earned the brothers a PGA Vision Award. The movie also won the New York Critics’ award for best actress. After this movie, the brothers took a break from their signature comedy style to produce an adaption of Peter’s novel Outside Providence. This break was short lived only to be followed by another Jim Carrey comedy, Me, Myself & Irene, a year later. The next year, they internalized their gross-out style with an animated feature (with sporadic live action) Osmosis Jones. Although interesting with its blend of animation and live-action, Osmosis Jones was not a success. Since then, the brothers have released a couple more notable films, such as a remake of The Three Stooges and a sequel to their first success Dumb and Dumber to, consistently sticking true to their famous goofy, gross-out comedy.
